Tunnel to Towers 5K Run

September 28, 2014

Today marked the 13th Annual Tunnel to Towers 5K run in New York City. This run was created in the honor and memory of Fallen Firefighter, Stephen Siller of Squad Company #1 in the FDNY, On the morning of September 11th, Stephen had just gotten off the late shift at Squad 1, Park Slope, Brooklyn. He was on his way to play golf with his brothers when his scanner told of the first plane hitting the Twin Towers. When he heard the news, Stephen drove his truck to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it was already closed. So he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and rushed on foot through gridlocked traffic and ran from the Tunnel to the Towers where he gave up his life while saving others.

For the last decade, members of the Holbrook Fire Department have participated in this Tunnel to Tower Run, not only to pay tribute to Stephen Siller, but to the brave souls lost on that day, and most importantly, in memory of Ex-Chief & Member of the FDNY's Rescue Company #3: Gerry Schrang.

This morning, members from all 4 Firematic companies participated in this run, wearing their full firefighter turnout gear through the entire race. Following the run and a small tribute at Gerry's name at Ground Zero, the team returned to Holbrook to share a few minutes with Gerry's Family at service at the memorial for him at his original fire house.

Here are some of the photos captured from the run.
